Sustainability

London has ambitious plans to build a greener, more resilient future—and the civil engineering and infrastructure sector is at the heart of that transformation. From low-carbon construction techniques used in Tower Hamlets to nature-positive design, such as the Waltham Forest Rain Garden, industry is embracing innovative solutions that not only support the city’s growth but also protect its environment. By integrating sustainability into every phase of delivery, we’re helping to create infrastructure that serves communities today without compromising the needs of tomorrow.

As the capital evolves, so does the opportunity to reimagine how we build and maintain the spaces people rely on every day. From smarter, more sustainable road maintenance practices to flood-resilient design and active travel networks, London’s infrastructure is becoming cleaner, safer, and more connected. Together, with collaboration and purpose, we’re helping to lay the foundations for a healthier, more sustainable city where people and nature can thrive side by side.

The transportation of materials for construction is a challenge we are facing head on.

Our parent company is leading the way in developing zero emission delivery solutions for vital construction materials. From the introduction of the UK's first battery electric concrete mixer in 2022 to the announcement of Tarmac's involvement in the UK Government's Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator Programme through the eFreight2030 consortium we are actively developing the technical solutions and knowledge for zero emission delivery at scale.

We recognise that sustainability is about securing long-term success for our business, our customers and communities by continually improving our environmental, social and economic performance throughout the whole lifecycle of our products, services and solutions.

At Riney our ambitious sustainability strategy is built on priorities that are most important to our business and our stakeholders. It defines our purpose and long-term commitments and goals under three key themes: People, Planet and Solutions.

We are committed to our environmental responsibility and operate in accordance with ISO 14001 and ISO 50001. We are committed to the delivery of our parent company’s Net Zero Roadmap.

Social Value

Creating lasting social value through infrastructure enhancements

At the core of our work is a deep commitment to generating meaningful, long-term social value. We focus on delivering outcomes that go beyond infrastructure—supporting people, places and the environment.

Local employment, skills & inclusive growth

We prioritise local job creation, apprenticeships, and training opportunities that upskill individuals and build career pathways within the construction and highways sectors. We work closely with local authorities, schools, and employment hubs to ensure our projects generate inclusive economic benefits, especially for underrepresented groups and disadvantaged communities.

Supporting healthier, safer communities

Our work directly impacts the wellbeing of the public, and we’re committed to creating safer, healthier environments through every project. We also invest in community engagement initiatives—whether it’s volunteering, sponsorships, or local improvements—Always helping to leave a positive legacy.

Driving sustainability and community resilience

Sustainability is embedded into our social value strategy. From using low-carbon materials to enhancing green spaces and supporting biodiversity, we aim to help build resilient communities that can thrive in the face of climate and economic challenges. We believe infrastructure should be a force for good—not only connecting people but uplifting the places they live.
